CM Devendra Fadnavis Praises Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray Amid Reunion Buzz
Here’s why Maharashtra’s CM Devendra Fadnavis hails rivals Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray for saying, “We aren’t enemies.”
Reunion rumours were stoked when Maharashtra’s CM Devendra Fadnavis thanked Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray for their commendation in “Maharashtra Nayak.” Fadnavis valued Pawar’s comments and underlined that ideological differences are not an enemy. Following Fadnavis’ request for Thackeray to join the ruling party, the two parties recently met. After the 2014 breakup of the BJP-Shiv Sena coalition, Thackeray went on to create the MVA.
NEW DELHI: On Tuesday, Maharashtra’s CM Devendra Fadnavis praised Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray and NCP (SP) President Sharad Pawar for their praise of him in the coffee table book “Maharashtra Nayak,” which was released at Raj Bhavan to commemorate his 55th birthday.
This coincides with increased political talk about a reunion, particularly in the wake of Fadnavis’ “come to the ruling side” aimed at Thackeray and the meeting that occurred the next day.
According to Fadnavis, “We are ideological opponents and not enemies,” as reported by PTI. “A senior leader with a big heart is Sharad Pawar. For me, his remarks are invaluable,” he continued.
Thackeray and Fadnavis met for more than 20 minutes last week at Legislative Council Chairman Ram Shinde’s office.
A day prior to the meeting, Fadnavis had stated that Thackeray “can come to the ruling side in a different way.”
“There is no way for us to go there (resistance), at least not before 2029. “There is absolutely no scope left for us to come there (opposition),” Fadnavis had stated. “Uddhav Ji can consider the scope of coming to this side (ruling party), and that can be thought about in a different way.”
For more than 25 years, the BJP and Shiv Sena had a solid partnership until 2014, when disagreements arose over seat-sharing plans.
After winning a majority in the 2019 Maharashtra assembly elections, Uddhav Thackeray split from the Congress and NCP to establish a government under the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) banner. The BJP views this as a betrayal.
Nonetheless, Fadnavis was instrumental in orchestrating a spectacular political overthrow in 2022. The MVA administration fell with the help of Eknath Shinde, who divided the Shiv Sena, and the BJP retook power in coalition with the Sena group led by Shinde.
Shinde became the chief minister, while Fadnavis became the deputy chief minister. Shinde, who had served as chief minister since the coup, was reluctant to cede the position to Fadnavis, despite the alliance winning a broad mandate in the 2024 elections.
Furthermore, since the two leaders made their first combined appearance in 20 years on July 5, there has been increased conjecture on a potential merger between Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT). As they hailed the state government’s decision to remove the requirement that Hindi be taught in schools, they displayed solidarity.
