Dharavi Redevelopment Project Sees Surge in Resident Participation
Redevelopment of Dharavi: Survey Nearing Completion as Resident Participation Grows
Dharavi Redevelopment Project: Residents can ask enquiries, get answers to their issues, and voice concerns by calling the DRP helpline, which has become an essential communication tool. In the past month alone, over 300 contacts were made explicitly regarding eligibility many involving documentation concerns or requests.
Mumbai: Interest in the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) has intensified as it enters the final phase of the eligibility survey. More than 700 calls were made to the toll-free helpline over the past 30 days. Of those, nearly 41% involved door-to-door survey-related questions an important stage in determining who qualifies for a new home under this ambitious redevelopment effort.
DRP officials interpret this as a strong sign of awareness among residents, who are keen to ensure they’re not left out of one of the world’s largest urban renewal initiatives.
Resilient Communities Like Kumbharwada Are Coming Forward
While there was initial resistance in several pockets including Compound 13, Kumbharwada, and privately owned tenements attitudes are shifting. In a promising turn, officials observed residents of Kumbharwada voluntarily numbering their homes in recent days. This action reflects a growing readiness to be counted and included in the eligibility list.
Officials believe this growing acceptance stems from increased clarity on project goals, as well as fear of exclusion if deadlines are missed.
The DRP Helpline Bridges Gaps, Answers Doubts
The DRP helpline continues to serve as a critical link between residents and the project authorities. Calls over the past month reveal frequent queries about eligibility documentation, survey appointment dates, and assignment of new homes.
Residents have also raised concerns regarding building conditions, floor level eligibility, available unit sizes, and even the government’s recent awareness drives. The helpline has proven to be more than a service—it’s a reflection of transparency and the authorities’ responsiveness.
Dharavi Redevelopment Project Master Plan: A Future Transformed
Approved in May, the Dharavi Redevelopment Project Master Plan aims to preserve Dharavi’s cultural and economic strengths while modernizing its infrastructure and housing. Plans include:
- A revitalized riverfront promenade
- Walkable neighbourhoods with green zones
- State-of-the-art schools, clinics, and community centers
One of the most ambitious aspects is the development of a 21-kilometer internal road network, alongside the widening of existing streets to improve connectivity and emergency response times.
Strong Participation Fuels Confidence
A DRP official remarked, “The amount and calibre of participation demonstrate that Dharavikars are knowledgeable, driven, and prepared for change. This is indeed a ‘housing for all’ project that will transform lives as well as buildings.”
With the final survey days approaching, community members are urged to respond quickly, ensure their documentation is ready, and use the helpline for support. The stakes are high but so is the opportunity for an empowered, inclusive, and sustainable Dharavi.
