Maharashtra Targets Fake Birth Certificates for Bangladeshi Nationals
Fake birth certificates given to undocumented Bangladeshi residents will be revoked by Maharashtra: According to State Minister Bawankule, 42,000 of these cases have been found. The real figure, however, is higher and will be determined by officials.
Mumbai Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule announced on Wednesday that the Maharashtra government will revoke phoney birth certificates given to Bangladeshi nationals living in the state illegally by August 15.
Bawankule stated at a press conference that 42,000 of these cases have been found. The real figure, however, is higher and will be determined by officials.
“Fake birth certificates issued to Bangladeshis who are staying in the state illegally will be cancelled by August 15,” Bawankule stated, adding that copies of the certificates must be forwarded to the Department of Health and the Department of Revenue.
On Tuesday, the minister used a video conference to address the state chief secretary.
Two officers who had previously been assigned to Malegaon were suspended by the state administration after BJP leader Kirit Somaiya claimed earlier this year that 3,997 Fake birth certificates had been awarded to Bangladeshis who had submitted falsified paperwork.
The Home Department’s Minister of State, Yogesh Kadam, stated in March that the state administration has been ruthlessly targeting Bangladeshis living in the state unlawfully for the past four years.
109 Bangladeshis who were living in the state unlawfully were deported in 2021, 77 in 2022, and 127 in 2023.
202 illegal Bangladeshi residents were deported and 716 were detained in 2024. Action was initiated against 600 Bangladeshis who were living in the state unlawfully until March 2024.
