Indian students who were evacuated talk about the growing Iran-Israel crisis, saying, “We saw drones, missiles.”
Early Thursday morning, more than 100 Indian students who had been evacuated from war-torn Iran arrived in Delhi. Many revealed their anxieties throughout the fighting and were thankful to have returned safely.
Delhi receives more than 100 Indian students who were evacuated from Iran.
The Indian Embassy organised the ground transfer of 110 Indian students from Tehran to Armenia on Tuesday as part of “Operation Sindhu,” in response to the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran. Later, the students boarded the first evacuation flight from Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, and arrived in New Delhi early on Thursday morning.
After arriving in Delhi, several students described the escalating tensions in the area, while others thanked the Indian government for allowing their return despite their anxieties throughout the crisis.
“I’m glad to be back in our country,” one of the Iranian students who was evacuated told ANI. While we did not witness such a thing in Urmia, the situation was dire elsewhere throughout Iran. We are back home thanks in large part to the assistance of the Indian government.
“I am a final-year MBBS student at Urmia University,” said another student. We saw rockets and drones. We were afraid. We are grateful to the Indian government, particularly the Ministry of External Affairs, and are delighted to be back in India. Although they were also concerned, our parents are now content.
An Indian who was evacuated from Iran, Yasir Gaffar, stated, “We heard the loud noises at night and watched the missiles flying by. I’m glad to have arrived in India. My dreams haven’t been abandoned. We’ll go back to Iran when things become better.
Mariam Roz, an Iranian student, thanked the Indian Embassy, saying, “Everything was ready for us. There were no problems for us. We are exhausted from our three days of travel. When we left Urmia, things were not that dire. From our dormitory’s windows, we would observe missiles.
Another pupil continued, “I am really pleased. The happiness I feel at finally being able to meet my family is beyond words. Iran is in a dire situation. There are little children suffering, and the people there are just like us. It is not good to go to war. Humanity is killed by it.
Operation Sindhu
In light of the escalating crisis with Israel, the Indian government announced “Operation Sindhu” on Wednesday, an evacuation plan for Indian citizens stranded in Iran.
“The Government of India has been taking various steps over the last several days for the safety and security of Indian nationals in Iran in view of the deteriorating situation as a result of the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement on Wednesday.
