Maharashtra Government Social Media Policy Targets Misuse by State Employees

Strict social media policies have been imposed by the Maharashtra government for state workers, and infractions will result in disciplinary action. Officials must refrain from utilising official symbols in personal posts, maintain a clear separation between their personal and official accounts, and refrain from critiquing government policies.

All state government workers, including those on contract or deputation, are subject to a comprehensive set of social media guidelines provided by the Maharashtra government, which warns that any infraction may result in disciplinary action under the Maharashtra Civil Services Rules.
The government observed that social media platforms are being abused in the digital age, since they facilitate quick contact and widespread outreach. This includes the dissemination of political commentary and false material in violation of service regulations, as well as the leakage of private information.
The following officers and staff are subject to the new guidelines:
The Maharashtra government (includes employees on a contract or deputation basis)
Boards, businesses, public sector initiatives, and local self-government entities

- No critical remarks regarding any recent or current state or federal policies or acts.
- When utilising social media for personal or professional purposes, use caution and responsibility.
- Keep your official and personal accounts distinct.
- Steer clear of apps and websites that the federal or state governments have prohibited.
- Official social media accounts may only be used by authorised authorities to advertise programmes and projects, and only after prior consent.
- Telegram and WhatsApp are examples of messaging apps that can be used for internal coordination and communication.
- Officials may discuss the achievements of government programmes without engaging in self-promotion.
- Posting information regarding government work is permitted, but not for self-glorification or excessive credit.
- Except for profile pictures, don’t upload images or videos of government vehicles, buildings, uniforms, or emblems on personal accounts.
- Never distribute any kind of offensive, disparaging, or discriminatory content.
- It is forbidden to share any part of official or confidential materials without the required authority.
- Access to official social media accounts must be formally transferred by officials.
- According to the circular, any violation of these rules shall result in disciplinary action under the 1979 Maharashtra Civil Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules.
