Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister on Wednesday said that “contract-based smear campaigns” will not affect him in any way given the situation surrounding standup comic Kunal Kamra’s comments against Eknath Shinde.
Kamra had mocked Shiv Sena president Shinde in a standup performance calling him a “gaddar” (traitor), after which a FIR for defamation was filed against the comic Monday. Twelve of them were arrested and then freed on bail; Shiv Sena members had destroyed the Habitat studio where the standup performance was filmed.
The incident was supported by Uddhav Thackerak’s Opposition Sena UBT Kamra. Speaking in the Legislative Council, Shinde remarked, “It will not matter how many contract-based smear campaigns are started against me; it will not change anything. It’s sad these folks (referring to Sena UBT) are using certain hypocrites (like Kunal Kamra) to attack me. Let them keep calling ‘gaddar’ repeatedly. But one day, they will to have closed their party.
I assumed they (Sena UBT) must have acknowledged the fact following the people’s mandate in the Assembly elections. The verdicts of the Assembly Speaker, Supreme Court, and Election Commission have identified the traitors; still, they remain unaware of the reality.
He promised more that the government will keep election-related commitments. “Our word is the saffron line on the black stone…” No programme has been cancelled by the government. Unlike the last one (of Uddhav Thackeray-led MVA), this administration is progressive and rich.
Shinde charged the Ppposition of suppressing freedom of expression during the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) term and urged them, particularly Sena UBT, to reflect on their comments about the government’s freedom of expression.
