After Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad violently attacked a canteen employee and accused the caterer of consistently supplying poor food, the suspension went into effect on Thursday.
After being seen on camera striking and slapping a staffer, the Buldhana lawmaker, who belongs to the Shiv Sena party led by Eknath Shinde, sparked intense political and popular outrage.
Gaikwad allegedly forced the canteen staffer to smell stale dal before attacking him, according to the widely shared video. Later, Gaikwad defended his conduct by claiming that he had previously voiced concerns about the quality of the meal on several occasions but that nothing had been done about it.
“I had complained several times about the food served in the canteen but the situation remained unchanged,” he stated.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis responded to the incident by vehemently denouncing the MLA’s actions, claiming they conveyed the incorrect message about MPs abusing their authority. “There are appropriate procedures for resolving grievances. “Never is violence justified,” he declared.
Eknath Shinde, the head of the Shiv Sena and deputy chief minister, disapproved as well, saying, “If there are issues, legal action can be pursued, but assaulting someone is not acceptable.”
