Missing DU Student Sneha Debnath Found Dead in Yamuna River, Days After Last Message About Signature Bridge Suicide

“She sent a last message before disappearing”: Friends remember months of hardship after finding DU student Sneha Debnath’s body in Yamuna.
Nearly a week after she allegedly leapt from Signature Bridge, the body of 19-year-old Delhi University student Sneha Debnath was found in the Yamuna River on Sunday. Debnath had communicated her intention to friends through SMS. Help had been requested by her family, including her father, a retired Army officer.
NEW DELHI: Almost a week after she is thought to have fallen over the Signature Bridge in north Delhi, the body of a 19-year-old DU student was found by divers in the Yamuna late Sunday. On the morning of July 7, Sneha Debnath informed her friends via mail and text that she planned to take her own life and made reference to the bridge.
Retired Army soldier Debnath’s father had taken to social media to make heartfelt pleas for assistance and police intervention. The case covered the family’s home states of Delhi and Tripura.
Two days after she vanished and her phone was turned off, a formal complaint was made on July 9. The FIR claims that on July 7, at approximately five in the morning, Debnath informed her mother that she was heading to the Sarai Rohilla train station to drop off a friend.
A taxi pulled up to their south Delhi home at 5:15 a.m. Her phone was turned off when the family called her at 8.45 a.m. They called her friend out of concern, only to find out that Debnath had not met her. Debnath was dropped off at Signature Bridge by the cab driver, who disclosed this information. She intended to jump from Signature Bridge, according to a note the family sent.
She had been agitated for the past few months, according to her close friends, who also indicated that she had sent emails and WhatsApp messages earlier that morning. A female who was later reported missing was saw by some witnesses standing on the bridge, according to DCP (South) Ankit Chauhan. The body was found in the river around 10 kilometres from the bridge, close to the Geeta Colony overpass.
It is unclear why Debnath, a second-year student at Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, made the severe decision and when she informed her friends of it.
When she went home on July 7, according to her relatives, she only brought her phone.
The family pointed out that not a single CCTV camera at Signature Bridge was operational and accused the cops of being incompetent. Sneha’s older sister, Bipasha Debnath, said TOI, “The bridge reportedly has over 60 CCTV cameras, but not a single one was operational on July 7 aside from a speed-monitoring camera that only captures still images of fast-moving vehicles.”
“My father spent more than 30 years in the Army before retiring as an officer. I observed him standing at the bridge, hardly able to move, asking bystanders whether they had seen his daughter despite the fact that he is 53 years old, suffering from severe kidney disease, and receiving dialysis.
Her body was retrieved on Sunday evening after an inconclusive search by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on July 9. Her identity was verified by her family.
