Numerous variables have impacted the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) performance in Maharashtra during the most recent elections. The following are the main factors that have influenced their election results:

1. Internal Disagreements and Strategic Errors
The Maharashtra BJP’s ascent to power has been tainted by internal strife and strategic errors. Subsequent elections saw the party’s performance decline following its initial triumph in 2014. The BJP’s position was severely affected by the breakup of the alliance with the Shiv Sena and the establishment of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition. Disagreements with the Shiv Sena as a consequence of the BJP’s insistence on obtaining the chief ministerial position led to the creation of the MVA administration under Uddhav Thackeray.

2. Agricultural Issues and Economic Distress
One important issue has been the state of the economy, especially in the agricultural sector. A number of issues have made rural voters unpopular, including recurrent droughts, unseasonal rainfall, dropping prices of important crops (onions, cotton, soybeans, sugarcane, and milk), and a lack of relief initiatives. There have been substantial consequences throughout the state as a result of the ire among farmers and other unorganized sectors. Farmers’ dissatisfaction has been made worse by BJP policies like the export restriction on onions and the contentious agriculture legislation.

3. Industry Relocation to Gujarat
Voters have taken a strong dislike to the large enterprises and projects that were moved from Maharashtra to Gujarat. Maharashtra’s employment and development have suffered as a result of this change, and the central government is perceived as having neglected the state. Using this topic, the MVA successfully attacked the BJP-NDA for weakening Maharashtrian pride and identity.

4. Dynamics of Caste and Reservation
Reservations and caste relations have also been significant factors. The BJP’s success was greatly affected by the Maratha quota controversy, which was especially strong in the Marathwada area. The party lost support from important constituencies as a result of its incapacity to adequately handle these issues.

5. Identity Politics and Community Polarization
The electorate did not respond well to the BJP’s campaign approach, which centred on identity politics and religious polarisation. Voters were more drawn to the MVA’s campaign because it offered a sharp contrast and focused on social and economic issues.

6. Social Movements and Independent Media
Voter attitudes have also been impacted by the growth of social movements and independent media outlets. These mediums contributed to a change in voter attitude by offering substitute narratives and highlighting the BJP-NDA’s flaws.

7. Campaign Planning and Leadership
Critics have pointed to the BJP’s leadership and campaign tactics. Investigation agencies have been used against opposition figures, and the party’s reliance on central leadership has been perceived as oppressive methods. Another major setback has been the BJP’s inability to foster local leadership and make investments in grassroots development.

8. Alliance Partners’ Performance
The BJP’s alliance allies have not performed well, especially the groups headed by Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde. The BJP’s standing has been further eroded by the alliance’s discord and internal dynamics.

9. Views of the Public and Attitudes of Voters
The way the public views the BJP’s leadership and policies has changed. Voter support for the party has decreased as a result of the way it has handled economic concerns, approached local development, and employed political techniques. The MVA’s success has been attributed to their capacity to put up a cohesive front and address important voter concerns.

10. The Effect of National Politics
Voter behavior in Maharashtra has also been impacted by the larger national political environment and the central government’s performance of the Bharatiya Janata Party. A wider trend of voter discontent with the party’s leadership is reflected in the BJP’s declining seat total nationwide.

In conclusion, a variety of factors, including leadership issues, economic hardship, caste dynamics, sectarian tension, and coalition partner performance, have affected the BJP’s performance in Maharashtra. The party’s election losses in the state have been mostly caused by these causes.
